The Remington 700 rifle has been around for many years, and in that time, it has earned many titles and reputations. A few of these include things like the most accurate rifle straight from the factory, the best build base for new guns, and the cheapest long-range rifle on the market. But many might wonder how many rounds does a Remington 700 hold?
Depending on the caliber it is chambered in, a Remington 700 rifle can hold 3, 4, or 5 rounds at one time in its internal magazine. This number will vary by caliber, model, and aftermarket modifications that people make to them.
Most Remington 700 rifles will use this internal magazine with a hinged floorplate for quick unloading, while others do not have a floor plate at all. Others still can be set up with box magazines, increasing their capacity even further.
In this post, we'll cover:
Bolt Action Rifle Ammo Capacity
The Remington 700 is similar to other bolt action rifles on the market in that it utilizes an internal magazine to hold additional rounds of ammunition. Once a shot is fired, you simply need to lift up on the bolt, pull it back to expel the spent round, push it forward to insert a new one, and push it down to lock it into place. Doing all this will allow you to quickly and easily reload a fresh round into the chamber, allowing a quick follow-up shot.
It is important to note that every rifle is different, and calibers come in all different sizes. For larger calibers, your ammo capacity inside of your Remington 700 will be decreased. Smaller calibers can fit more rounds in the same space, meaning you will get a higher round count.
For example, a Remington 700 rifle that is chambered in a larger caliber, such as a 300 Winchester Magnum, will generally only hold three rounds inside its internal magazine. On the other hand, one that is chambered in a 223 Remington will be able to hold up to 5 rounds inside of it. Again this will vary by model and caliber, so it is important to check to see how many rounds a certain rifle will fit before loading it or buying the gun.
Floorplates and Magazines
As we previously mentioned, most standard Remington 700 rifles will come equipped with a floorplate with a hinge that will allow you to quickly and easily unload any rounds of ammunition in the gun. Simply open it up, and the rounds will fall out through the bottom of the gun. Not all Remington 700 models come with this feature, however, as they utilize different stocks that will not be able to integrate a floor plate.
A great example of this is the Remington 700 Long Range. Designed to be the ultimate long-range rifle, these guns come equipped from the factory with an upgraded HS Precision stock that does not include a floorplate due to its design. The rifle will still include an internal magazine, and you will just need to unload the gun through the top the same way you load it.
Other Remington 700 rifles can also be equipped to use standard box magazines, such as the type you would see being used with an AR15. This significantly increases the ammo capacity, and you can find magazines that hold up to 10 additional rounds. These magazines have to be used with specific rifle stocks, however. Luckily the rifle stocks on a Remington 700 rifle are easy to adapt or change, allowing you to use this type of reloading system if that is what you are looking for.
How Many Rounds Do You Need?
The number of rounds that your rifle will need to hold will largely depend on you and your needs. Are you hunting or precision shooting, where you may only be shooting once or twice over long periods? A lower capacity should be adequate. Are you hunting other critters that are more plentiful or shooting in a speed competition with your rifle? Then you may want to opt for one with a higher round capacity.
Regardless of the number of rounds that your Remington 700 rifle can hold, you can rest assured that you can always change it down the road if you need more. While it may take a little money and time to change out the stock, you can upgrade to one that gives you the ability to use box magazines to allow for quick reloads and higher round counts.
Reloading and Laws
Another important consideration when it comes to your round capacity in your rifle is how often you intend to load or reload your gun, as well as local laws. Many areas will require you to unload your rifle whenever you transport it in a vehicle, so more rounds mean more ammo you will constantly be loading and unloading.
Other areas may limit how many rounds you can carry in your gun at one time, especially while hunting. For example, many states have placed a 5 round maximum requirement on any hunting rifles being used, meaning that you can only carry up to 5 rounds in your rifle at one time. You can carry additional ammo on your person or in your pockets. Still, they restrict how many can be in the gun to even out the playing field when it comes to high round capacities and quick reloads during hunting situations.
Final Thoughts
With the popularity of the Remington 700, it is often not thought about the actual round capacity in these guns. Luckily you should have more than you need with the standard 3, 4, or 5 round internal magazine that most Remington 700 rifles come equipped with, but you can rest assured that you have more options as well should you need them!
